A couple of weeks ago, several of us pongers (+ spouses or significant others) went to see Marty Supreme. The movie is loosely based on Marty Reisman–a real person known for his table tennis prowess and his powers of self-promotion. He actually wrote a book, “The Money Player” (see picture below). The group had mixed reviews on the movie, but the professional critics seem to like it. Here’s an interesting connection between Reisman and Decatur Table Tennis:
Our very own coach, George Cooper, went to a tournament in Baltimore (he couldn’t remember what year, but it was probably in the 90s). Marty Reisman was there and challenged George to a money match. George beat him and walked away with $500!!! Unfortunately, that incident never made it into the movie. I now see George as a celebrity.
